Released in 1995, the Virtual Boy sold fewer than a million units, with only 22 compatible game titles released, and was widely considered to be a commercial failure. It was a portable table-top system consisting of goggles and a controller that used a spinning disc to achieve full stereoscopic monochrome 3D. Nintendo's second attempt with 3D development was the Virtual Boy, designed by Gunpei Yokoi, creator of the Game Boy handheld console and popular Metroid video game. Less than six months later on July 28, 2011, Nintendo announced a significant price reduction from US$249 to US$169 amid disappointing launch sales. The Nintendo 3DS was released in Japan on February 26, 2011, and worldwide beginning in March 2011. The handheld's most prominent feature is its ability to display stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or additional accessories, and it offers new features such as the StreetPass and SpotPass tag modes, powered by Nintendo Network augmented reality using its 3D cameras and Virtual Console, which allows owners to download and play games originally released on older video game systems. As an eighth-generation console, its primary competitor was Sony's PlayStation Vita. The system features backward compatibility with Nintendo DS video games. It was announced in March 2010 and unveiled at E3 2010 as the successor to the Nintendo DS. By March 2018, it had sold over 17 million copies worldwide, making it the 3DS's best-selling game.The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld game console produced by Nintendo. A Nintendo eShop version was released in 2012. Mario Kart 7 was the second 3DS game to sell over five million units, following Super Mario 3D Land. The game was released worldwide in December 2011. The game supports both local and online multiplayer for up to eight players. New additions to the game include hang-gliding attachments for karts, the ability to drive underwater, the ability to drive in first-person, and the ability to fully customize the vehicles' builds. While racing, the players make use of power-up items that either assist their character or hinder opposing characters. As with previous games in the Mario Kart series, players participate in racing on various Mario-themed tracks, playing as one of seventeen different Mario characters.
