![]() Paul Ulibarri is currently the king of the brand logo (thanks to Big Jerm’s clever and clean design) and has shown that if you create a design that people think looks cool they will buy anything you can get the logo on, from hoodies and caps to discs. Don’t believe me? Just watch any Disc Golf Network coverage of the Pro Tour and count how many fans are in Uli and Paul McBeth caps. Just like in all walks of business, the right design sells. Some manufacturers do brand discs with these logos (McBeth’s range, and Eagle’s new Rainmaker for instance), but we are also now seeing pro players selling discs and clothing directly to fans via their own personal websites, facilitated by their access to wholesale discs and pricing from their primary disc sponsor. Well, it’s about the ability for a player to market themselves, and through this create an income stream away from their on-course performance and selling tour discs through their disc sponsor. Players such as Chris Dickerson also used the opportunity to change sponsor to unveil a new player logo.īut why has there been such an explosion of player branding and logos recently? This offseason’s biggest signings - such as Ricky Wysocki and Kona Panis going to Dynamic Discs - were announced accompanied by thousands of discs stamped with player logos such as Ricky’s “Sockibomb” and Kona’s shield - much to the delight of the hungry disc golf buyer’s market. Therefore, it should be no surprise that over the past few years this trend has become very common in professional disc golf as well. Over time, it has become common for sports stars to create a brand logo that they can use not only to represent themselves but to sell sporting (and other) goods to their fans. The logo was very simple, it was a laurel wreath silhouette, taken from the emblem of the Wimbledon tennis championships, and it represented his business partner's achievements at that great event. Now, I know what you’re thinking, this is all very well, but I don’t care about some random Austrian who I won’t remember the name of tomorrow, and I fully agree with you - but the logo he created was not for himself, it was for his business partner, and even after 70 years that logo is still seen on the high street and in fashion magazines across the world. For Tibby gave the sporting world two rather interesting products: The sweatband (which isn’t the topic of today’s article) and the first mainstream sportsperson’s logo and brand. However, Tibby’s legacy in sport is more significant than his on-pitch achievements, and his influence is still present across many sports to this day including Disc Golf. He was an Austrian club footballer, who never represented his country and by all accounts should have faded into history with barely a mention of him outside his closest descendants. Tibby Wegner is a name the vast majority of people will never have heard of.
